Mermaid is one of the legendary creatures appearing in many myths with a half-human, half-fish body. In European myth, mermaids are evil monsters that specialize in drawing sailors into the deep sea.
However, there are many people today who do not know this true origin of mermaids, and think that mermaids are always beautiful, fragile and gentle princesses. This is due to the success of Disney's The Little Mermaid (1989). Most people would think of Ariel when talking about mermaids.
Let's take a look at other non-Ariel mermaids to get a more diverse view on this character.
Peter Pan (2003) - The first scary mermaid in a movie for children
Among films about Peter Pan, the 2003 movie is the most appreciated thanks to the charismatic acting of the two child actors playing Peter Pan and Wendy. One of the special thing of this version is that Neverland in the film is not depicted as a fairytale land, but a place full of dangers. The above picture is a scene where Pan takes Wendy to see the mermaids. From afar, they are attractive beauties, but as the two come closer, they show sharp teeth and hands with membranes and claws, ready to drag the innocent children into the sea. Regardless of whether they're male or female, they're indeed scary.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) - A whole cannibalistic mermaid group
Although the movie is quite boring compared to the previous three installments, the fight scene between the pirates and the mermaids in White Hat Bay was remarkable. From afar, we see a very beautiful mermaid played by Amanda Seyfield with passionate singing. But then she quickly revealed herself as a bloodthirsty creature, along with her peers, who wanted to drag the pirates down to eat them.
The number of mermaids in this scene is up to a hundred. Anyone dragged into the water is set to die tragically. More frightening is that the mermaids are extremely versatile. They are able to jump onto ships to catch people and destroy wood with sharp hands. They also have weapons to drag their prey into the sea from afar, making the scene in this movie more terrifying than the other works about mermaids.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2004) - A mermaid tribe
In the 4th movie, Harry Potter has to participate in the Triwizard Tournament and one of the very difficult challenges is to dive to the bottom of the Black Lake to rescue his loved ones. There, Harry encountered a group of mermaids, the "Merpeople". The race is characterized by a fairly human-like body, but their skin has scales, with orange-yellow hair and fish-like mouth. They also use iron tridents as melee weapons.
Siren (2018) - The transformed mermaid
The movie revolves around Bristol Cove, a peaceful coastal town which legends said was a home of mermaids. A girl named Ryn suddenly appeared in town, and a series of cruel attacks followed. The film is quite compelling as it shows how mermaids like Ryn have to manage to live in the human world. In particular, the mermaid has the ability to transform from human form to mermaid form and vice versa in appropriate conditions. Ryn is extremely violent, just like the legends, but she is also very charming with her own characteristics.
