The vast ocean is an unlimited source of inspiration for horror movies. Sharks or crocodiles have been featured on the big screen through out the years. But did you know, once upon a time, Hollywood was more fascinated with mysterious entities - the deep sea monsters?

There was so much to exploit from unnamed monsters, aliens or mutant species, which came from the dark ocean, waiting to drag their victims to the bottom of the sea. Here are 6 of the most famous old horror movies based on the deep sea monsters.

DeepStar Six (1989)

1989 was a boom for horror movies about deep sea monsters, and DeepStar Six was the first film released that year. Produced and directed by Sean S. Cunningham (who had previously made Friday the 13th), although the film was not highly rated in terms of content, it is still interesting enough to watch. The story of the film is relatively simple: a US naval unit found a huge cave system with many new undiscovered life forms. However, they also unintentionally angered an aggressive monster there and it sought to kill all the uninvited guests.

Leviathan (1989)

Released just a few months after DeepStar Six, Leviathan also shares many similarities with its rivals. The film also follows a monster awakened by a group of miners in the sea. The movie is more intriguing than DeepStar Six as it explores the terrifying feelings of being trapped in the deep sea, not just staring at each other being eaten by monsters. However, the most scary thing in the movie is still the way the members get attacked.

The Abyss (1989)

It doesn't sound right to list The Abyss here because the horror element in the movie is quite small, but this is one of the top movies about the deep sea monsters. The film also premiered in 1989 but was directed by famous director James Cameron. It is about a group of divers who are hired to search for a mysterious missing nuclear submarine. Underwater, they encountered a strange alien species. Of course, the story of James Cameron has never been so simple, it also uncovers many more mysteries related to human existence. The film received four Oscar nominations and won the Best Visual Effects category.

Dagon (2001)

Although not an outstanding movie, this is certainly the best film adapted from one of H.P. Lovecraft's books. The story begins when a young couple encounter a sudden big storm on their vacation trip. The boat was badly damaged and washed ashore in a coastal fishing village. However, all the people of this village are hybrid creatures that are worshiping a weird fish god. And their goal is to find a way to make ordinary people give birth to an immortal half-blood.

Deep Rising (1998)

A group of bandits broke into a luxury yacht and found that everyone on board was mysteriously gone. Soon after, the group discovered that the cause of this horrific incident was a giant creature with tentacles that could eat people. The film is a very good mix of action and horror, but unfortunately technology at that time couldn't make the monster more impressive.

SSA discovered a spacecraft of at least 300 years old deep in the ocean and the US government immediately sent a group of leading scientists to investigate it. Interestingly, they discovered that the ship was owned by the United States and it was built to collect objects in the galaxy that were brought back to Earth. It contained a special object, a shiny golden sphere of liquid that let people enter. From here, the lives of the members are threaten.
