With the 2020 Met Gala indefinitely postponed, stars are spending the first Monday in May by reminiscing about red carpets past. Derek Blasberg, known for his role as YouTube’s head of fashion and beauty partnerships and for his many close celebrity friendships, took to Instagram Sunday to share a series of epic selfies from past galas, taking his followers inside fashion’s most exclusive party.

Tomorrow is the First Monday in May, which is like Christmas for people who think fashion is a religion,” the 38-year-old captioned his first slideshow of pictures with Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus, Dakota Johnson, John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, Jared Leto and more.

Due to the Covid-19 crisis, the museum is closed and the #metgala is canceled. So I dug up 30 personal pics from the most glamorous night of the year. Apologies in advance for all the selfies… once a fan always a fan.

The personal pics date back to 2013’s “Punk: Chaos to Couture” red carpet, and include Kim Kardashian’s infamous floral gown from that year as well as a snap of Kerry Washington and Vera Wang with Nicki Minaj cluelessly texting in the background, Karlie Kloss posing in the bathroom, Gigi Hadid dancing near a statue and many configurations of models and celebrities.

While Blasberg strolls down memory lane, fans are using their time in quarantine to fashion homemade red carpet looks made from newspaper, gift wrap and other found goods in order to recreate iconic Met Gala outfits of yore.

Though this year’s gala — themed, “About Time: Fashion and Duration” and chaired by Meryl Streep, Emma Stone and Lin-Manuel Miranda — has been upended by the pandemic, Anna Wintour et al will host a livestream at 6 p.m. ET on May 4 on Vogue’s YouTube channel.

Dubbed “A Moment With the Met,” the virtual event will include a performance by Florence + The Machine and a DJ set by Virgil Abloh.
