Every year, the American Academy adds new characters to the member list. This year, the Academy has tried to erase the #OscarsSoWhite wave that the Academy and the Oscar Awards itself has been criticized recently.

The Academy has added 819 new characters in the member list. 819 faces in the film industry have been 'recruited' to become members of the American Academy, they will have the right to decide the Oscar-winning works in the following seasons. Among the newcomers, 45% are women, 36% are ethnic minorities and less represented communities such as Asians, people of color, and 49% are international artists and filmmakers from 68 nation.

The list of colored people and of Asian descent who have received an Oscar increase this year.

Some of the famous artists featured in this list are Asian-born comedian Awkwafina, Taiwanese actress Constance Wu, Zendaya black star, young British talent Florence Pugh, Latin actress Eva Longoria.

At the time of the 2015 and 2016 Oscar nominations, the Academy was criticized for its lack of racial diversity. Hashtag #OscarsSoWhite has become a hot topic not only for artists but also for fans. Since then, the Academy has made efforts to improve, putting women and people of other colors in the nomination list.

Regarding the Oscars of 2021, due to the impact of the global Covid-19 pandemic, the event will be postponed to April 25, 2021.
