- BLACKPINK’s “BORN PINK” Becomes Their 2nd Album To Be Certified Silver In UK
- BLACKPINK’s Rosé Shows Love For Jisoo On Set Of “Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint”
For the sixth year in a row, the global recorded music market trended upward, growing by 7.4% in 2020 with total revenue of $21.6 billion USD. Streaming accounted for 62.1% of total global revenues, and revenues from physical formats fell by 4.7%. Despite this global dip in physical sales, South Korea saw a rise in CD sales, thanks to K-Pop artists, including BTS and BLACKPINK.
IFPI previously crowned BTS the No.1 “Global Recording Artist of the Year”. With combined sales and streams from MAP OF THE SOUL: 7 and BE, BTS become the first Asian artist and non-English singing artist to take the top spot on the “Global Artist Chart”.
They also scored No.10 on the “Global Top 10 Digital Single” chart with “Dynamite”…
…as well as No. 1 and No.4 on the “Global Top 10 Album All-Format Chart” for MAP OF THE SOUL: 7 and BE, respectively, and No.1 (MAP OF THE SOUL: 7), No. 2 (BE), and No.8 (MAP OF THE SOUL: 7 ~ The Journey) on the “Global Top 10 Albums Sales” chart.
BLACKPINK’s THE ALBUM took the No.5 spot on the “Global Top 10 Albums Sales” chart.
K-Pop largely contributed to South Korea becoming the fastest-growing major music market in 2020, boosting the growth rate up to 44.8%. Overall, South Korea sits at No.6 in the “Top 10 Global Markets” chart, but if the rate of growth continues, it could be sitting at No.5 or higher this time next year!
BLACKPINK and BTS Named as Group With The Longest-Charting K-Pop Album in U.S.
BLACKPINK's 'The Album' is the Fifth-Longest-Charting K-Pop Album in the U.S
On Tuesday, Feb. 23, the full-length comeback album of BLACKPINK was pronounced as one of the longest-charting K-Pop albums in the United States. Though "The Album" fell down to No. 122 from No. 91 this week, the said EP of Jennie, Lisa, Rosé and Jisoo have spent a total of twenty weeks on the Billboard 200 chart already.
Of course, the other K-pop albums that spent several weeks on the Billboard 200 chart are all from BTS. As a matter of fact, the "Map of the Soul: 7" album just celebrate its anniversary on the tally as it already been listed there for 52 weeks, which equates to one year.
"Love Yourself: Answer" by Jin, Jimin, Jungkook, J-Hope, V, RM and Suga, holds the title as the longest-charting K-Pop album in the Billboard 200 chart as it already stayed 98 weeks on the chart. "Love Yourself: Her" and "Map of the Soul: Persona," both by BTS, ranked third and fourth, respectively.
Last week, it was divulged that "The Album" by BLACKPINK was the best-selling K-Pop album in the United States. It remains to be seen if the EP would be able to continue its streak on the Billboard 200 chart in the coming weeks.
However, it is important to note that the latest EP of Jennie, Lisa, Jisoo and Rosé is still performing very well in terms of streams in other music streaming platforms. So, it is not impossible that it would keep its status until the much-anticipated solo debuts of BLACKPINK members Rosé and Lisa later this year.
BLACKPINK Continues its Reaping Nods and Breaking Records Lately
Meanwhile, the "Lovesick Girls" and "How You Like That" tracks of BLACKPINK got another nod recently. The two songs, popularized by Jennie, Lisa, Jisoo, and Rosé, are said to be the fastest get a RIAJ silver certification. Should the tracks continue their dominance in terms of streams, it is not impossible that both would receive gold or even platinum certifications very soon.
"How You Like That" by BLACKPINK also received a gold certification from RIAJ after it garnered more than 50 million streams. "Kill This Love," "DDU-DU DDU-DU" (Korean version) "Boombayah," "As If It's Your Last" (Korean version) and "Lovesick Girls" all received silver certifications for amassing 30 million streams already.
If that is not enough, "How You Like That" also spent 24 weeks on Billboard Global Excl. U.S. and Global 200 charts already. By far, it is the longest-running song by a female group on both tallies, which simply proves that BLACKPINK, indeed, is the biggest girl band there is today.
"How You Like That" also made it big on the South Korea Spotify charts this week. As of this writing, the BLACKPINK song is at No. 27 with more than 8,100 daily streams. "Lovesick Girls," on the other hand, is presently at No. 10, with more than 13,700 daily streams.
BLACKPINK Was Selected By K-Pop Costume Designers To Stunt
The Lingerie Look Best
If you thought underwear could only go under your regular clothes, think again. The “lingerie look”— clothing inspired by undergarments—has been gaining huge traction in South Korea over the last year. In a new “Comment Defenders” interview with AYO on YouTube, two experienced costume designers selected BLACKPINK as the idols who pull off the lingerie look perfectly.
Lingerie Han CEO Han Seon Mi has been designing lingerie-inspired costumes for the Korean entertainment industry since she worked on the 2016 movie The Handmaiden. Joined by junior designer Na Hyun Bin, she’s branched out to working with idols over the past five years—including Apink, Red Velvet, and aespa. So, who better to decide which idols ace the lingerie look?
One AYO commenter shared their own thoughts—”An idol who can pull off the lingerie look so well: BLACKPINK’s Jennie.” Unsurprisingly, the Lingerie Han team couldn’t disagree. Na Hyun Bin, a selfie confessed huge BLACKPINK fan, brought up a time when Jennie wore a net dress with a cone bra.
Jennie wore the outfit on SBS Gayo Daejeon red carpet in 2018. Both the mesh patchwork knit dress ($3,900 USD) and the leather corset top ($2,195 USD) were designed by Alexander McQueen. “I thought she pulled off the lingerie look so well,” says the junior designer.
In true BLINK fashion, Na Hyun Bin went on to name another BLACKPINK member’s lingerie styling: Rosé. A few days ago, the singer uploaded an Instagram photo where she wore a $695 USD Alexander Wang jersey t-shirt with a built-in bustier panel.
Between the casual top and her Adidas sneakers, Na Hyun Bin says Rosé “expressed natural style” in her lingerie look.
Next up is Lisa‘s lingerie fashion. In one Instagram update last June, Lisa wore a destroyed tulle top from Maison Margiela ($640 USD) with a glittering diamante corset over the top. She paired the look with sheer lace cloves and Celine jewelry.
According to Na Hyun Bin, Lisa brought a “trendy and stylish” feeling to her lingerie look, in line with her usual style.
While the Lingerie Han didn’t mention Jisoo‘s style, there’s no denying that she pulls off their unique fashion just as well as her fellow members. Just take this outfit she wore at BLACKPINK in Your Area in Macau back in 2019.
Wearing a corset over a graphic t-shirt with added tulle on the sides, Jisoo gives off a cool, edgy attitude in the lingerie look.
Han Seon Mi went on to reveal that BLACKPINK’s team once contacted her asking for costumes, but she sadly couldn’t accept the job because of situations she had going on at the time. Here’s hoping their schedules will align in the future.
