For the second time this year, Blackpink has been forced to settle for second place on Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart, kept from running the show with a brand new single by another that ended up being more popular...and this time around, they’re denied a No. 1 by another group from their home country.
BTS keep their single “Dynamite” at No. 1 on this week’s Digital Song Sales chart with a second massive frame, one which most smashes couldn’t manage in their best turns. The South Korean septet’s all-English tune holds atop the list (which should refresh again in just a matter of hours) for a second consecutive turn with 182,000 sales, according to data provided by Nielsen Music. That’s not just one of the biggest sales figures in recent memory, it’s much, much larger than the runner-up.
New at No. 2 on the Digital Song Sales chart is Blackpink’s “Ice Cream,” which opens in second place with just over 23,000 copies sold. That’s a healthy sum for almost any act, but it pales in comparison to the ruler this time around. In fact, BTS’s latest outsold Blackpink’s new smash more than seven times over, and it managed that feat in its second frame on the tally.
When “Dynamite” first arrived, it racked up the largest sales frame in years thanks to a massive and dedicated fan base as well as a genius strategy that kept people buying more than one copy of the tune. The seven-member vocal band’s new release arrived with over 260,000 digital copies sold, and that number swelled to 300,000 copies sold when physical editions were included as well.
All those purchases, as well as very healthy sales and some radio play, helped “Dynamite” become not only BTS’s first No. 1 hit on the Hot 100, but the first leader on the all-encompassing tally of the most-consumed songs in the U.S. for any musical act from South Korea.
Blackpink was denied a No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart just a short time ago when their solo venture “How You Like That” launched at No. 2, coming in behind Kanye West and Travis Scott’s “Wash Us in the Blood.” That track, which arrived mid-tracking week, only bested the K-pop favorites by a relatively small margin.
With 23,000 copies sold and and just under 19 and a half million streams to its credit, “Ice Cream” is headed toward a lofty debut on this coming week’s Hot 100, and it may very well give the quartet their highest placement yet on the ranking. Blackpink is already one of the most popular all-female vocal bands in the world (perhaps the most successful at the moment), and they were joined by pop superstar Selena Gomez on this latest single, and her presence helped the cut perform as well as it has in its first frame of availability.
