Director Kim Tae Yong's upcoming movie 'Wonderland', starring Gong Yoo, Park Bo Gum, Suzy, Jung Yu Mi, Choi Woo Sik and Tang Wei, is currently in discussion to be released overseas via Netflix.
According to a film industry insider on October 22, the distributor Ace Maker and Netflix have agreed to release 'Wonderland' through Netflix around the world, except for South Korea and China. With this, the movie will be released in theaters in South Korea and through Netflix overseas. The distributor is said to have local releases in mind for China, given that Netflix does not provide services there and Tang Wei is part of the main cast.
However, on the same day, an official of Netflix refused to confirm the news, saying, "It is true that Netflix has discussed (about the overseas release of 'Wonderland'), but nothing has been decided yet."
'Wonderland' is the first movie by director Kim Tae Yong in nine years since his 'Manchu' in 2011. Through the artificial intelligence service Wonderland, it depicts what happens to people who are consoled by video calls and loved ones who are no longer seen in the real world. Its splendid cast includes Suzy, Park Bo Gum, Gong Yoo, Tang Wei, Jung Yu Mi and Choi Woo Sik.
Ace Maker and Netflix have been discussing the release of 'Wonderland' overseas since the early days of filming. Rumor has it that the two sides agreed to an overseas copyright contract with Netflix for about 30 percent of the production cost of the movie after long negotiations.
Wonderland finished filming its first part at the end of September and is currently working on the second half. The movie will be filmed in January next year and will be released in theaters in the second half of 2021.
