'Game of Thrones' actor Kit Harington has explained the real reason why he thinks Jon Snow shouldn't be the king in the series.

The HBO fantasy hit, based on George RR Martin's best-selling novels, followed the likes of Jon and others vying for power - and for the ultimate goal, The Iron Throne.

Jon ended the controversial eighth and final series by trekking off into the snow-covered wilderness beyond The Wall.

And while his lineage - which he discovered late on - meant he was a suitable candidate for king, it was actually his brother Bran who ended up claiming the crown. Jon's lover (and aunt) Daenerys Targaryen (Dany) gave it her best shot, but she met her end by Jon's blade.

But actor Kit never wanted Jon to take power - believing he'd be a rubbish king.

The honourable Jon was never one for the treacherous south, where the throne lies and where his uncle Ned Stark met his grisly demise.

In a video posted on the Twitter account of @purple_dwagon, Kit summed up his feelings.

He explained: "When people say 'I wish you had been on the Throne' or 'I wish you had been on the Throne with Dany', I would disagree because Jon's place was always in the north. He would never have been happy in the south. He's like Ned Stark. When Ned goes south, he's in danger. [Jon] belongs north of The Wall."

The star added that he's never actually watched the ending.

"This terrible thing that he's been through is all falling off as he goes north of The Wall."

Meanwhile, in the capital of King's Landing, the new king Bran ruled with the fan favourite Tyrion Lannister, brought to life by Peter Dinklage, as his chief advisor.

Lena Headey's Cersei Lannister and Nikolai Coster-Waldau's Jaime Lannister met their end as Daenerys unleashed her last remaining dragon on the city.
