Why didn't Disney delay 'Mulan' release despite COVID-19 outbreak?
The COVID-19 pandemic was first detected in China and has now spread to nearly 100 countries and territories worldwide. Although this has caused major damage to the film industry worldwide, Disney has not changed the Mulan release schedule on March 27. Of course, this is expected by many to seriously affect the film's box office. It will be hard to recover the budget of more than $200 million.
The live-action version of Mulan is based on the animated version of the same name, released in 1998 by Disney. The film is directed by Niki Caro and she herself confirmed the 2020 version will not be a musical like in the animated version, but the film will focus on the intense journey, the hard time that the character has to experienced to bring honor to her family. As for the cast, Liu Yifei will play the lead role alongside other actors such as Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Gong Li...
Recently, with MGM and Universal delaying the release of No Time To Die for seven months, many viewers have been concerned that other studios may be able to do this too. But while Mulan hasn't been able to release in China later this month because all theaters in China have been closed, Disney has decided to keep the film's release schedule in the rest of the world. The film is set to be released in the next few weeks, and press conferences in several countries have even begun. Therefore, it is too late to postpone the schedule.
No Time To Die's rescheduling costs Universal and MGM 30 million USD. But it seems Disney will lose more if they postpone the movie now. The James Bond film could reduce its damage to $30 million because the media team has not done any promotional campaigns yet. Meanwhile, Disney has done a lot of promotions for Mulan, so not delaying the release date is probably a good decision to avoid wasting the money spent on media.
Of course, this will make Mulan suffer some effects from the COVID-19 pandemic. The disease has devastated China and Mulan relies heavily on this market, so its opening box office will be "much lower" than originally calculated.
