Just over a week after it's debut, where it's already poised to become Netflix's most-watched feature film ever, a sequel to Extraction is happening.
Screenwriter Joe Russo, who wrote the Extraction script adapted from the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, is returning to write the sequel, according to Deadline.
While no other deals are confirmed beyond Russo's, both star Chris Hemsworth and director Sam Hargrave are both expected to return.
Joe Russo and his brother Anthony Russo's production company ABGO is putting together the sequel, and are 'confident' that Hemsworth and Hargrave will be back, though the deals won't be finalized until the script is ready.
'The deal is closed for me to write Extraction 2, and we are in the formative stages of what the story can be,' Russo told Deadline.
'We’re not committing yet to whether that story goes forward, or backward in time. We left a big loose ending that leaves question marks for the audience,' he added.
Netflix revealed that Extraction earned the biggest opening-day audience for any film, and it was projected to be watched in 90 million households over the first four weeks of its release.
The story follows Hemsworth's character Tyler Rake, a 'black market mercenary' who tackles his most dangerous job yet, to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned crime lord.
Sam Hargrave made his feature directorial debut on Extraction, after serving as the stunt coordinator on Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo.
Since the original movie leaves it open for both prequel ad sequel opportunities, it seems both options are being explored.
'There was always a simple drive to the story, a balletic execution of action where you take a damaged character who made an egregious mistake in the past and has a shot at redemption which might be fatal,' Joe Russo said.
'What was key is that we needed a muscular action director like Sam to be the main creative force in the execution of the action,' he added.
While there is no deal for Hemsworth quite yet, Joe Russo said the plan was for him to work on the script and show it to him before a deal can be made.
The Russo Brothers are coming off last year's Avengers: Endgame, which became the highest-grossing movie of all time at the global box office with $2.797 billion.
Hemsworth is attached to star in a new Thor movie, Thor: Love & Thunder, which is slated for release on February 11, 2022.
