One Direction have a whole lot of history — and they finally may be ready to revisit it. Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson are rumored to be in talks to reunite in July to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the boy band’s formation on The X Factor UK.
The “Adore You” singer was the first to set tongues wagging in April when he hinted that the group has something special “in mind.” Then, the “Strip That Down” crooner all but confirmed what fans had already suspected.
“We’ve got a 10-year anniversary coming up, so we’ve all been speaking together a lot over the last few weeks, which has been really nice,” Payne told The SunOpens in a new Window.. “To hear a lot of people’s voices and seeing old content and different things that we haven’t seen for a long time or never seen before, it’s very interesting. At the moment, I’m not sure what I’m allowed to say.”
Fortunately for fans, actions speak louder than words. Days after the Hugo Boss underwear model’s interview, he followed their former bandmate Zayn Malik on Twitter — and Styles, Horan and Tomlinson did the same. The social media activity immediately sent Directioners into overdrive, although Payne later insinuated that the “Pillowtalk” singer (who quit 1D in 2015) would not be involved in a possible reunion.
Simon Cowell formed One Direction on the British singing competition in 2010 after Styles, Horan, Payne, Tomlinson and Malik auditioned separately. Although the band finished in third place, they quickly became the most successful act to ever come out of The X Factor UK.
1D released four albums as a quintet: Up All Night (2011), Take Me Home (2012), Midnight Memories (2013) and Four (2014). After Malik’s exit, they dropped one more record, Made in the A.M. (2015), before splitting up in January 2016 to embark on solo careers.
Ahead of the group’s 10th anniversary, Us Weekly rounded up everything we know so far about their potential reunion. Scroll down for all the details!
Harry Hints 1D Has a Reunion ‘in Mind’
“I don’t know if [a Zoom call] is the reunion that we had in mind,” Styles said on SiriusXM Hits 1 on April 3 amid the coronavirus pandemic, which has seen countless artists performing via livestreams and video chats while fans are quarantined at home. “I don’t know if that … would be the way to do it.”
Liam Says ‘People Are Forwarding Emails’
“There’s a number of different things that we are all working on to try and make happen, and people are forwarding emails around,” Payne told The Sun on April 10. “But more than anything it’s just been a real good time for us to connect together again.”
Harry, Niall, Liam and Louis Follow Zayn on Twitter
The four remaining members of the boy band made headlines on April 13 for following Malik on Twitter, which caused the hashtag #OneDirectionReunion to trend on the platform.
The Reunion May Include New Music
Page Six reported on April 13 that One Direction have discussed a number of ideas for their 10th anniversary, including a TV special and a new single. They reportedly ruled out a concert tour.
Niall Seems to Confirm the Rumors on Instagram Live
When a fan asked the “Nice to Meet Ya” singer to touch his hair on Instagram Live if the rumors were true, he did just that — and very obviously.
Liam Says He’s Been in Touch With Niall and Louis
Payne said on The Late Late Show With James Corden on April 13 that he had a “beautiful” FaceTime call with Horan and also recently spoke with Tomlinson. Six days later, the “Stack It Up” singer went live on Instagram with Alesso and said, “Actually, Louis told me off for revealing a bit about plans the other day.”
Liam Suggests Zayn Is Not Involved
Payne joked during the same Instagram Live on April 19 that Alesso could “come and fill in for Zayn” and “join the band.”
Niall and Liam Go Live on Instagram
The bandmates caught up on Instagram Live on April 20, but they did not mention a possible reunion. Instead, they talked about Billie Eilish, coronavirus fundraisers and the long-rumored 1D group chat on WhatsApp.
Niall Says 1D Has ‘Barely Spoken About’ Reuniting
Horan let fans down on May 21 when he quashed the rumors. “We’ve barely spoken about it,” he said on NovaFM’s Smallzy’s Surgery. “Like, obviously the band got together in July, I think it was 2010. It’s the 10-year anniversary coming up and we’re, you know, we were chatting about, like, is there anything we can release or content or something? And we came to the conclusion that there’s nothing.”
