Previously, 4 Korean groups submitted nominations at Grammy 2021 including BTS (submitted 7 applications for 7 categories), BLACKPINK (submitted 4 applications), Monsta X (submitted 7 applications), and SuperM (submitted 8 records). If BTS was honored to be named for one category, the remaining 3 Kpop groups were completely empty-handed.
BTS has made history when they first received a Grammy nomination in the “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance” category for the song "Dynamite". The group is the second Korean artist after Sumi Jo (1993) to be nominated at the Grammy and is the first Kpop group, the first Asian group to receive a nomination at the prestigious American music awards ceremony.
BTS resonated when receiving the first Grammy nomination in their career.
This is a predicted result because, among the groups applying for Grammy nominations, only BTS has many opportunities due to the recognition of both experts and audiences in the US. BTS’s achievements are clearly shown through the impressive rankings at the Billboard Hot 100, the “huge” sale volume in the US market as well as the group’s position and influence on the Western music industry over the years.
BLACKPINK pity “empty-handed” despite submitting 4 applications for 4 categories, including Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year: ‘Ice Cream’ (with Selena Gomez) and Performance Best pop group/duet: ‘Ice Cream’ (with Selena Gomez).
However, many BLACKPINK fans still expressed their disappointment when their idol could not have a nomination for “Best New Artist” category. Before the American Academy of Music announced the nomination list, the Blinks “prayed” for Black Pink to do wonders. In 2020, the YG girl group has worked hard and achieved many remarkable achievements in the international market. Some fans criticized the racist Grammy, “robbed Black Pink’s nomination” and many other angry comments on Twitter. Meanwhile, some BTS fans sarcasm BLACKPINK fans … “climbing high and falling pain” because “do not know the amount of strength”.
BLACKPINK fans also express their disappointment because the group “failed” the chance to be on the Grammy nomination list.
Some comments:
“Black Pink deserves a nomination. Many Western fans are also expecting them to be nominated for the Best New Artist award, which proves that they know how famous they are. Is there a 4-year-old K-pop group that can do like BLACKPINK? “;
“I’m really disappointed that BLACKPINK isn’t being nominated”; “For us, BLACKPINK needs a Grammy nomination to prove that their hard work pays off. Hopefully next year will be BLACKPINK’s year”;
“The Weeknd, BLACKPINK and Selena Gomez not being nominated at the Grammy are the most disgusting joke of the year. These artists deserve the nominations they deserve”;
“BLACKPINK fits the criteria very well and many Grammy prediction articles all put their names in the nomination category for the best new artist.”
“BLACKPINK hasn’t been robbed of a nomination. Their fans are just confusing themselves that they qualify for a Grammy nomination, when in fact they don’t. ; “Black Pink doesn’t deserve a Grammy. First, help them achieve Daesang in Korea, think Grammy, Blink”;
“Please stop delusional. Do you think Grammy is a market that you like to enter? Don’t be ashamed?”;
“BLACKPINK is the next best K-pop group after BTS in the US, but that doesn’t mean they are as recognized as BTS. So far, only one influential Korean artist in the US is BTS. stop “;
“Since when was BLACKPINK on par with The Weeknd? The Weeknd not being nominated is shocking, but BLACKPINK is just the thing. They were nominated for a new called “shock”;
“Nothing to disappoint. He was like a 4th grade kid who dropped at Seoul National University, is there anything sad here? “…
This issue still remains a controversial matter that fans have talked about since when Grammy announced the nominee list.
Hopefully next year, good news will come to BLACKPINK and their fans.
