Did you know that they almost debuted under some very different names?

BLACKPINK is one of the most popular female K-pop groups ever. Ever since their debut in 2016 with their song “Boombayah”, the YG's girl group has been releasing hits after hits which has the whole world dancing! But there are some things you probably don’t know about the iconic K-pop girl group.  

Cover stars

Blackpink were the first-ever K-pop girl group to be featured on the cover of Billboard magazine! In April of 2019, the foursome was featured on the cover of Billboard magazine solidifying their place in the US market.

Blackpink is signed with ones of the biggest K-pop agencies

Blackpink is signed with YG entertainment which is one of the three biggest K-pop agencies in South Korea. 2Ne1 was another very well-known girl group from YG entertainment had disbanded in 2016. The separation of 2Ne1 happened in the same year that Blackpink was formed.

Blackpink is the only girl group in the company and their labelmates are well-known South Korean artists like BigBang, CL, iKon, and Psy (until he left and founded his own company – P Nation).

Blackpink have their own TV show

That’s right! In 2018, there was a short reality series called BLACKPINK House which stars the foursome with a total of 12 episodes.

Blackpink are record breakers

Blackpink’s single from 2018 ‘Ddu-Du Ddu-Du’ had surpassed their rivals in terms of video views. Within its first 24hrs of release, the music video became the most viewed video on YouTube with over 734 million views in 9 months.

Blackpink are also history makers

In 2019, Blackpink were the first female K-pop group to perform at the Coachella festival - the annual music and arts festival held at the Coachella Valley, USA.

Blackpink are indeed an international group

Jisoo was born in Seoul and was raised in South Korea. Lisa was born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand. Jennie was born in South Korea but lived in Auckland, New Zealand for 5 years. Rose was born in Auckland, New Zealand but was raised in Melbourne, Australia.

"Blackpink" was not the original name of the girl group

The original idea for the band name was "Pink Punk" however the change to Blackpink was made after the group thought it had a double meaning with two sides. "Black" symbolizing them as strong and charismatic while the "pink" made them feminine and graceful.

Not long after the formation of Blackpink, Jisoo has confirmed that the group's members almost debuting under some very different names. Along with "Pink Punk", "Baby Monster" or "Magnum" were also on the list of suggestions.

The name of Blackpink's fandom

Like all major artists, the band has a big, loyal fan base, and with this usually comes a fandom name. Blackpink fans are called Blinks which is taken from the letters in their group name.

Jennie’s Nickname

Some call Jennie Human Gucci or Human Chanel because of her fashion sense. She’s known for her sharp dressing in designer finds. Jennie previously told Elle Indonesia that she used to go through her mother’s wardrobe and try to find “the most vintage Chanel could find.”

Blackpink also hold a record subscriber rate

As of August 2020, Blackpink has the fourth largest fan base in the world, only three other artists — Justin Bieber, DJ Marshmello and Ed Sheeran — have more subscribers.

Blackpink have over 48 million subscribers which is more than Fifth Harmony (13.5 million subscribers) and Little Mix (14 million subscribers). This make Blackpink the female group with the largest number of YouTube subscribers.
