BLACKPINK has become the first 'million seller' K-Pop girl group after selling more than 1.2 million copies of their first full-length album 'THE ALBUM'.
According to YG Entertainment on October 26, BLACKPINK's 'THE ALBUM' has sold a total of 1,209,543 copies so far. About 871,355 copies were sold in South Korea and 319,300 in the U.S. and Europe. In addition, 18,888 limited-edition LPs were sold out earlier.
In K-Pop history, no girl group album has been able to sold more than 1 million copies. Not only in the 2000s but also in the 1990s, before the music market stagnated, 760,000 copies was the highest official sales for a Korean girl group. BLACKPINK has thus made history as the first K-Pop girl group to sell a million copies.
Before its record-breaking sales in South Korea was officially confirmed, BLACKPINK's 'THE ALBUM' showed off its unrivaled presence on various global charts. It topped the iTunes Album Chart in 57 countries around the world shortly after its release on October 2. The album ranked second on the U.S. Billboard 200 and the U.K.'s official album charts.
BLACKPINK's album sales are the highest for female groups in more than a decade in the U.S.. Billboard noted that, "the first week sales of 'THE ALBUM' were the highest since 'Welcome to the Dolhouse, 2008' by American girl group Danity Kane."
Meanwhile, 'THE ALBUM' is expected to stay in the top 10 on the U.S. Billboard 200, which will be updated this week. BLACKPINK is also the first K-Pop girl group to make it to the top 10 of Billboard 200 for three consecutive weeks.
