K-Pop idols become famous and loved by fans around the world thanks to not only their musical talents, but also their beautiful looks. According to the standards of the K-Pop industry, idols always have to stay slim to show off their beautiful body lines when performing on stage. This is also the reason why many idols are forced to follow a strict diet with many banned dishes.
Entertainment companies often have to strictly manage the trainees' weight and diet to ensure that they have a perfect body before debuting. Out of the many methods used by companies, forbidding trainees from eating certain foods is a very popular practice.
Here are 7 common dishes that most trainees cannot eat.
Fried chicken
Fried chicken is a dish that many people love and choose for daily meals. Its crispy skin and meat make fried chicken one of the high calorie foods. That is why it leads the list of prohibited foods for trainees.
Seulgi (Red Velvet): "We always made it difficult for our managers because we often secretly eat fried chicken. I'm the one who likes to eat greasy food so I had to secretly order fried chicken."
Tteokbokki (stir-fried rice cakes)
Tteokbokki is an extremely popular street food among Koreans. It is made from rice cakes, fish cakes and a variety of vegetables with chili sauce. This sweet and spicy dish is one of the best mood-relieving dishes, but not for K-Pop trainees.
Chanmi (AOA): "Before every monthly assessment, we have to pass the weight test. Once, I secretly ate Tteokbokki and my weight was over the allowed limit. So I didn't pass the monthly assessment that time."
Pastries
Everyone has good memories of pastries. However, this is a type of food that contains a lot of calories. It is also high in sugar which can cause weight gain in a short time.
Seolhyun (AOA): "Every time the agency checked our weight, we had to record what we ate. We ate bread and cakes, but we only wrote that we ate pumpkin and cabbage. The company scolded me and asked me how I could gain so much weight by just eating those things."
Ice cream
Ice cream is loved by people of all ages, especially during hot summers. This sweet, cool dish melts in the mouth and brings happiness and joy to many. But it can bring big problems to trainees, too.
RM (BTS): "Once I was eating ice cream with V and suddenly confronted a company employee. So we hid our half-eaten ice creams in our bag and then finished it later. It is a memory that I cannot forget."
Jjajangmyeon noodles
Jjajangmyeon (noodles in blackbean sauce) is also a familiar dish of Koreans. It includes noodles and a special blackbean sauce - made from stir-frying pork and various vegetables with blackbeans. It's too nutritious for some trainees.
RM (BTS): "There was a time I really wanted to eat Jjajangmyeon, so I pretended to go to the toilet urgently but ended up going to a nearby Chinese restaurant. I only ate about 2 bites and had to hurry back."
Jokbal (pig's trotters)
Jokbal is a Korean food loved by many people around the world. Pig's trotters are cooked with soy sauce and other spices and boiled for hours to make the meat softer. Because of the high fat stored in the trotters, trainees are not allowed to eat this dish.
Tzuyu (TWICE): "I used to order Jokbal with Momo and Sana. To avoid the cameras in the building, we had to pretend to tie our shoes near the window to receive the food and eat it."
Hamburger
This American dish is also very popular in Korea. With various ingredients, the hamburger has solidified its position as one of the most convenient fast food for Koreans for many years. However, because of its high calorie content, it is understandable why entertainment companies forbid their trainees from eating this dish.
YooA (Oh My Girl): "One day, I secretly went to a hamburger restaurant and happened to see a company employee standing next to the window. I was scared so I went to the toilet to eat it."
Seeing the list of forbidden dishes for idol trainees, Korean netizens showed great respect for the will and passion of the trainees, as they were able to give up these eating pleasures. However, what makes Korean netizens surprised the most is that pizza, a food famous for making you fat, is not on this list.
- "No pizza? What a relief!"
- "Life doesn't make any sense without these dishes… I live for food."
- "Indeed, eating pizza does not cause weight gain haha..."
- "That's the only reason why I never became a trainee ^^"
- "I thought instant noodles would be on this list"
- "Why are all the good dishes banned?"
- "Pizza survived, yeah!!"
