Officially released in 2017, 'Call Me by Your Name' unexpectedly became a strong contestant in various awards and was even nominated for up to 4 Academy Awards, including the Best Picture category. Although in the end it only won the Best Writing Adapted Screenplay, it was still one of the highest-rated films of the year. In terms of content, the film tell the story of Elio (Timothée Chalamet), then 17 years old - who fell in love with his father's research assistant Oliver (Armie Hammer) during a summer in Italy.
Shortly after the release of 'Call Me by Your Name', director Guadagnino shared that he was eager to make a sequel. Since the movie ended with Oliver deciding to return to the US and get married, fans are eagerly awaiting to see more of this beautiful yet sad love story. André Aciman - the author of the original book released another book called 'Find Me'. However, it is not clear whether Guadagnino's film will be based on it.
Previously, this director shared the idea of bringing the AIDS crisis into the story, but after this information, nothing else is known about the sequel. The fans have started to wonder if it wouldactually happen. And recently, during a talk with the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, director Guadagnino finally updated the progress of the film.
As for the actors in the sequel, director Guadagnino confirmed that the duo Chalamet and Hammer will return. He said, "Of course, it was a great pleasure to work with Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Esther Garrel and the other actors. Everyone will be in the new movie." It is known that in the first part, Stuhlbarg plays Elio's father and Garrel plays Marzia - Elio's friend and the person he dated for a short time.
In addition to the cast, Guadagnino also revealed that production of 'Call Me By Your Name 2' was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He said: "Before [the COVID-19 outbreak], I made a trip to the United States to meet a screenwriter I love very much, whose name I don't want to say, to talk about the second part. Unfortunately, we had to put it on hold." This seems to implicitly indicate that James Ivory - who wrote the script for the first part will not return.
Fans are happy that Chalamet and Hammer will be coming back, although the information they know about the movie is still not much. Let's wait and see what 'Call Me By Your Name 2' will have to offer!
