Every movie lover must have heard of Denis Villeneuve once, through movies such as Blade Runner 2049, Arrival… which have won many film awards.
Denis Villeneuve is a Canadian filmmaker born in 1967 in Canada. His career as a filmmaker started in 1994. He has only nine movies but has received numerous major nominations from the Palme d'Or to the Oscar. Denis's films are typically slow, heavily focused on the story and macro issues, with beautiful panoramic views. His success is due in part to the collaboration with renowned cinematographer Roger Deakins. Below is a list of the best movies of his career to date.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Following the story of the first 1982 film, Blade Runner 2049 follows the character K in the pursuit of rebellious Replicants. The trail he received led him to uncover unbilievable secrets about the Wallace Corporation, the Replicants and especially his own identity. The film's story is full of existentialism through the fate of K. He always wonders what his existence means, which brings him lonely moments to the end. The work won 2 Oscars in the category of Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects.
Arrival (2016)
One beautiful day, 12 mysterious alien ships landed on Earth without any warning or communication signal, making the whole world began to panic. Linguist Louise Banks and physicist Ian come to a ship to find a way to talk to the alien creatures. Do they want war, peace or something else?
The film focuses on the very basic problem of human beings: communication. It is the basis for building relationships and expressing the personality of a race. However, when the aliens came to Earth, when they had never uttered a voice, humans began to communicate with each other in extremely negative ways.
Rioting took place everywhere, the great powers began cutting off contact with each other to preserve the secret and culminated in a large-scale war plan even though the ships themselves had no intention of fighting.
Arrival has simple storytelling, which challenges the patience of the viewers. However, if you can overcome everything and wait patiently until the end, your emotions will explode, just like the character Banks in the movie when knowing the truth behind these ships.
This is also the work that helped Denis Villeneuve receive an Oscar nomination in the Best Director category. The film was also nominated for eight awards and won a gold statue in the Sound Editing category.
Sicario (2015)
The land of Mexico, especially the border with the US, is where war and violence happen every day and escalate continuously. In that place, FBI agent Kate Macer received an order to coordinate with the notorious assassin Alejandro to capture a drug lord. He was the one who ruined Alejandro's family as well as bombing the members of Kate's group.
The two thought it was just a mission to completely destroy the ongoing trade, but in fact it is a political move. They then found out more about corrupt police officers, a corrupt government which is willing to betray its people to protect criminals.
The film received three Oscar nominations in 2016 and Emily Blunt's performance as Kate received a lot of praise from critics.
Prisoners (2013)
What will you do to protect your family? Keller Dover's father faced the worst nightmare of every parent when his 6-year-old daughter Anna is missing with another child. The only clue was a RV that was parked on a nearby road. Although Detective Loki had caught the driver Alex Jones, but there was not enough evidence, so he was released.
Dover learned that the police would not do their best, and his daughter's life was in danger, so he investigated it himself. The pain, the loss takes him on a cruel journey, where Dover does everything even the most disgusting to be able to find his child. The film received an Oscar nomination in the category of Best Cinematography.
Incendies (2009)
Not really well known but Incendies is the movie with the most unexpected and heartbreaking ending that Denis Villeneuve has ever created. The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and was also an important stepping stone for the director to receive major projects later.
Incendies revolves around the story of two twins. Their late mother left a will to them, asking them both to travel to the Middle East to find their missing father and brother. This journey reveals many tragic, painful things their mother had to go through.
This is a sophisticated anti-war work, depicting the unending wars that the Middle East region has been suffering every day and every hour.
