A-list actress Cate Blanchett admitted that her wedding anniversary sucks – because her husband's presents were Hoovers and ironing boards.
Cate has been married to her director hubby for 23years and is so used to getting white goods, she’s renamed their romantic day the “microwave anniversary”.
The Oscar-winner, 51, said: “My first wedding anniversary my husband gave me a vacuum cleaner and then he gave me a mixer."
“It used to be silver and gold but now that list includes coffee makers and irons and gone is the sense of getting to the gold and diamond anniversary. Now it’s the microwave anniversary. It’s so less romantic now and timeless.”
Cate met fellow Aussie Andrew Upton, 54, on the set of a TV show, in 1996. He proposed three weeks later.
They married the following year and spent a decade living in Brighton in Sussex before moving back to Sydney. They formed their own film company together called Dirty Films.
In lockdown, Cate has been home schooling their four children, who are aged from five to 18, but admits it’s been a hard job.
Speaking on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast, she said: “We did have a meltdown on Sunday, the kids are all home schooled and I think it all struck us between 9 AM and 11.30 AM that we had all been locked in and not seen another human being for seven weeks."
“It was like we were in deep space and could not get off the spaceship. I was frightened someone was going to eat someone. Your children think you are so annoying and you think, ‘I am not that bad, am I?’ I am always crying. It was one of those where everyone storms off and then you forget it.”
But the global pandemic means Cate, who won Oscars for The Aviator and Blue Jasmine, has finally been able to work out how to use her phone.
She said: “In lockdown I have learned how to operate my mobile phone and I have been contemplating vegetables. I have been growing herbs and doing pretty basic things.”
