It is rare if romantic movies don't have a happy ending as usual. No matter how hard their relationship might be, the two main characters will always find a way back together and live happily ever after.
However, happy endings sometimes are not essential.
La la land
La la land has brought the audience to much amazing chemistry and the generally upbeat tone of the movie, which made a happy ending was totally expectable. But, that was not what the producers wanted. The couple decided to go separate ways as Mia and Sebastian find their own successful career, but the relationship had to put to an end.
Maybe that was what Hollywood wanted to portray to the world, sometimes you just can't have it all.
Gone with the wind
Gone with the wind will always be a Hollywood's epics, and the selfish character of Scarlett O'Hara will never be forgotten. The bond between Scarlett and Rhett is legendary but she just can't let go of her feelings for Ashley. She then realized Rhett is the one for her, he already left.

He then of course falls for her but in the end, they realize they can’t make it work and ends the relationship. The reason is just so easy to catch, dating a man with scissors instead of hands is incredibly impractical.

(500) Days of Summer is a funny, interesting and honest showcase of a doomed relationship.
