Going into more detail about his health issues for the first time on Tuesday night, Calvin told his Twitter followers: ''Interesting year for me 2014, started with me knocking myself off number 1 in the UK and ended with my heart getting restarted in the ER.''

Calvin was responding to a video posted by a fan of his high energy DJ sets back in 2014. Six years ago the star reached number one with his track Summer, released in March, while he also released his fourth studio album, Motion, which debuted at number two in the UK and number five in the US.

Huge collaborations with Rita Ora and Ellie Goulding followed as well as a very high profile romances with Ora and Taylor Swift. In November though the world's top-earning DJ pulled out of Glasgow's MTV European Music Awards with just 24 hours notice, tweeting at the time: ''No EMAs for me this weekend. Got some heart problems. Heading home to see if it can be fixed x.''

The DJ later confirmed he had been diagnosed with arrhythmia, a problem with the heart's rhythm that affects two million people in the UK. It led to him giving up alcohol, which he said has made a 'noticeable difference' to his life.

''Things are a bit less fun but haven't had an arrhythmia since 2014' he previously tweeted in 2018 after a fan questioning his sober lifestyle. Wouldn't dream of encouraging anyone to drink two bottles a night and live off the baker – got me in a right old state.''
