K-Pop is a harsh environment for idols, as there are bans from the agency that can never be violated, and a group like BLACKPINK is no exception.
As a company that upholds the quality of music and is somewhat comfortable in the management mechanism, so that artists can maximize their ability, it seems that YG Entertainment will be very easy in its rules. But no, YG is considered the company that has the most strict rules for artists, and some only apply to their "golden goose" - BLACKPINK.
In the past, K-Pop fans often heard about YG's prohibitions against artists such as: no driving, no club, no surgery, no dating… Almost every entertainment companies have these kinds of rules, but for a period of time the bans will expire and the idols will have the freedom to date, or to drive a car...
For some companies like JYP, they will cancel the ban on dating when the idol has been active for 3 years or more (previously this rule was 5 years). SM especially encourages idols in their company to date each other to ease travel and avoid media attention, and SM has had a lot of couples from their company dating.
However, it seems YG are more strict. For example, a dating ban was imposed for trainees, and there were two trainees who were about to debut in BLACKPINK and iKON dating, resulting in both being kicked out of the company.
Among YG's artists, BLACKPINK is subject to the most rules and bans.
At first, this girl group was not allowed to drive. When sharing this information, Rosé once said that the company does not allow girls to drive, nor have a driver's license although the group's average age are about 23-25 years old. At this age, groups like TWICE and Red Velvet can control their own vehicles rather than seating at the back seat like BLACKPINK .
However, after Somi's reality show, who is under The Black Label (YG's subsidiary), aired, the audience discovered that the ban did not apply to all YG artists, as it was possible to see BIGBANG and 2NE1 driving.
Secondly, BLACKPINK is not allowed to meet the boy group from their company, typically iKON. Perhaps due to the old dating incident, BLACKPINK was banned from meeting iKON to avoid them falling in love. In one program, iKON's Bobby shared that the members will not be allowed to meet BLACKPINK, even when they're in the same company - each group have their own rooms.
According to Jisoo, when she was a trainee, the male group would eat at 6 o'clock and the female group at 7 o'clock to limit their meeting at the company cafeteria.
It can be seen that YG Entertainment does not want to make any mistakes. Any incident will greatly affect the reputation of their artists.
