Red Velvet Seulgi has talked about her personality, the promotion with her sub-unit with Irene, and plans for her solo activities through an interview with Allure Korea.
Red Velvet — Irene & Seulgi made their debut in July with their first mini-album “Monster,” and Seulgi’s photo shoot with the magazine took place after wrapping up promotions.
It's raining today as always. Irene & Seulgi's unit activities are over, right? Yes, the official activity has ended so I have some freedom. This is the first group and also the beginning so I don't know how it will turn out. Because maybe something keeps coming up … (Laughter)
It's a year where content consumption is higher than last year. Maybe that's why I listened to Psycho and Monster a lot this year. Especially at the closing time, 'Psycho' used to be played in the editor's room.
Haha! I think you've heard more than us. I'd like to give you a CD.
The song was good and the choreography was great, but we didn't do a lot of 'Psycho' activities, right? Right. That is also a pity for me and all members regretted it. But 'Psycho' isn't over yet. We will have many more stages performing together in the future, I think we'll be able to show it to you. Must show it to you.
So I think it would be more fun to perform on stage with 'Monster'. It's been a while on stage, how do you feel?
It's been a long time since we've been doing music shows. I was trembling. If I couldn't find the camera, I would have been worried. Even though I've been preparing for a long time, I still talk about it with Irene. Shaky, I don't know if I can do it well.
What would Irene say at such times?
"I will be able to do it! 'Later when I come back I will do everything' Later I see him telling the truth. And it was really nervous. We had a lot of delays on the comeback. We also filmed a variety show together, why did they appear all of a sudden? Same situation. (Laughs)
How did the unit start?
At first, I thought, "Oh, do the two of us have a small group?" I am curious about what concept is next. Irene has been working with her for a long time so I don't think it will be a problem. I'm curious about its concept. After 'Monster' was released, the people around asked a lot. This is the first time I tried, I was worried because this is a concept that I have never thought of. I need opinions from those around me. I heard that if it weren't for the two of you, who would digest this.
Both 'Monster' and 'Naughty' are very refreshing. I think this choreography can be done with 2 people. And looks very difficult. At first, can we do this...The dance "Touching" has to have a clear foundation. Otherwise, it can look dulky and show a lot of gaps. I practiced the basics as if I were a trainee again. It was too hard in the beginning.
When we met last year, I remember saying, "I value my hands when I dance". Finally, you finished it with your hands.
I also learned that I can express my fingers in detail. We didn't just dance. We had to use our heads. But we were doing it. I gained confidence. This is an attempt that no one has done before. When we showed this to each other, I was confident that our fans would like it. I had more fun. I was satisfied because it shows the sum of the two. Through this activity, I learned more and expanded my scope.
I can feel his concentration on the stage. Are you good at concentrating? I think it works well once I concentrate. During this promotion, I felt that the viewers were paying attention. I'm not the only one who's paying attention, but the viewers are also paying attention. I've heard a lot about how we keep seeing each other, and I was very proud that we felt the same way.
When I first heard the title, "Monster," I was a little surprised. There was also EXO's Monster. But if you look at the stage, it's bound to be Monster. We also talked about the title. But from the demo, it was a monster. When you close your eyes and listen to this song, it reminds you of the image of a monster. Just this song is a monster - a monster plodding through a dream. When I was making the visual, I kept taking the twin ones.
When I look at Irene & Seulgi's album, I get nervous and relaxed repeatedly. After a full performance of 'Monster' and 'Naughty', 'Uncover' is played. You dance alone in black pants and a white shirt. The choreography 'Uncover' starts with the choreography I showed you at the concert. When Seulgi was about to perform solo, I thought it should contain my deep story. That is my story, but it can become everyone's story. I thought everyone was wearing their own masks. I can't show everything, I thought I would live with a smiling mask and my feelings hidden inside. However, at the bottom, there are emotions and whirlpools, and there is also a desire to not express that emotion. I also have such a thing. At our concert stage, we will start by turning smiling faces. That's how 'Uncover' was born.
It's a song that looks into your inner feelings. If you're Korean, you'll have some of that invisible burden. I wanted to show you what's inside me. So I tried to dance as freely as possible. (Dancing with hands) Show these lines. I'm the type who's more sensible than anyone else. But when I'm on stage, I don't think I'm going to do everything I want to do for three minutes, but I don't usually do it. I wanted to have that kind of message. Let's take off me and fly around.
You also said, "I like dancing, but I'm not a professional dancer." It sounds humble, but it seems like only people who understand their own expertise can say it. What do you think is the difference between professional dancers and K-pop artists?
Oh, that's a very difficult question. Professional dancers focus their time and effort in one place. We need to express more. We have to be on the screen, right? The dancers have a wider stage. Also, we always care about the public's eyes, and the dancers seem to focus more on themselves. It's a relationship that inspires us and gives us synergy.
Even if you're not a fan, you have a listener for pop music. How about meeting someone who likes Red Velvet's songs?
I feel great! I feel like I should do better. Red Velvet's voice is perfect. You're doing a very unique music. Interesting group, huh? I think it'd be nice if you could look at it like this.

Red Velvet Seulgi also shares thoughts about her activities since the debut until now:
Red Velvet debuted in 2014. Is there anything you want to say to yourself that you've come all this way? I'm the type who gives myself a stick and a carrot, and I have to compliment myself... But I think I always worked hard. I think I did my best. Anything.
When are you lazy, Seulgi?
I'm always lazy except when I work. I think I usually save up my energy and use it when I work. So I always tried my best then. It's a job that affects someone, right? I think that's why I got more control over myself. "I got to work harder after seeing you." I'm happiest to hear that. I think I should do well first. That's why I tried to keep it.
When I interview you on the stage, you have a "gap difference" these days. You're shy when you do interviews. Don't you think sometimes you feel confident like, "I'm the best!" On purpose.
I've never thought I was the best. Is it because you've seen more people than I am?
Don't you ever think of yourself as a genius?
"No, I'm always trying.
Red Velvet's first unit was there, so you might be able to do solo activities someday. What do you want to do when you're a solo artist? I'd like to try solo. I took out more of my head. But when there were two people, I missed the atmosphere of the five. It was really fun when the five of us worked together. I realized again the importance of these five people.
When I wear comfortable shoes, I feel like I can go anywhere. If you could go anywhere, where would you go?
I'm good at going anywhere. If there are too many people, I walk with my head down. If I can go anywhere freely, I want to go to famous restaurants. Sometimes I wait a long time to eat... I'm not good at that kind of thing. These days, it's my pleasure to go to my parents' house and see cats. When I go to my parents' house, I'm almost a princess. (laughs) I'm going home today.
