While changes are slowly taking place, South Korea's beauty standards are still pretty strict compared to other parts of the world.

These 5 K-pop idols have broken the mold and are speaking out against their industry's unrealistic beauty expectations.

Ever since her debut with f(x) in 2009, Amber has been known for her tomboy style. Her fashion choices and growing tattoo collection are both a bit controversial, but she never lets any negative comments stop her from being herself. Amber has even poked fun at herself in various Youtube videos and always keeps a positive and confident attitude.

The members of BTS always encourage their fans to be themselves and not let any negative comments affect them. Each member has their own unique style, both in their fashion and music, that they're proud to display regardless of any criticism. BTS can commonly be found speaking out against beauty standards and the negative impacts a critical society can have on a person.

MAMAMOO's Hwasa is finding incredible success through being true to herself. She has mentioned how difficult it has been for her to be considered overweight by Korea's strict standards and how nasty people's comments can be. Through learning to embrace her curves and tan skin, she has become an icon for self-acceptance and more realistic standards.

Hyolyn debuted as a member of SISTAR in 2010 and faced some very harsh comments from critics. Some people felt that she was unattractive and made their comments very public. Hyolyn also received mixed feelings about the large cross tattoo she got on her stomach, which she had to cover up to perform on most music shows. Hyolyn has continued to be true to herself and has gained a large following of people who are inspired by her confidence and beauty.

She is also very open about the cosmetic procedures she's had done, even the more controversial work like her breast implants. She is another idol who proudly embraces her tan skin and never tries to lighten her complexion. Jessi's unforgiving confidence has made her a huge opponent of K-pop's harsh standards.

Back in their era, 2NE1 was the only group with "ugly" concept. They brought something different to K-pop with a bolder, stronger, more edgy images compared to other groups.
