IU Caught Tearing Up After Seeing Her Fans For the First Time Since the Pandemic

On December 4, IU was one of the many attendants of the 2021 Melon Music Awards (MMAs). On this day, the K-pop soloist scored five different awards: "The Best Female Soloist," "TOP10," "Songwriter Special," "The Album of the Year" and the most prestigious award of the night, "The Artist of the Year."

Upon receiving the awards, IU noted in her speech that though it is still difficult to see her fans, it has become a little more possible to see them now. She stated that she believes the day that people can enjoy in-person events will come very soon. She also said, "I hope to see you all next year, with everyone healthier than ever."

Since the COVID-19 pandemic started in March 2020, in-person concerts and festivals have been banned in South Korea. In the second half of 2021, in-person events were allowed, but a restriction against cheering, screaming and chanting was enforced to prevent the spread of the virus.

Following the awards ceremony, IU was spotted in her van. The idol took time to greet fans who waited outside the venue to see them, waving and happily greeting them. As she gazed at her fans, the idol was seen shedding tears.

From her van, she asked her fans, "I am really happy to see you. How have you all been?" In response, IU's fans stated that they had been well and missed her lots. They also congratulated IU on her wins during the awards ceremony, and the idol thanked them before waving goodbye.
