2021 MAMA to be Held in Korea in December, According to a News Outlet
According to Ilgan Sports, the 2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards will be conducted in Korea after taking into consideration the current COVID-19 situation across the globe.
The news outlet continued that the 2021 MAMA will take place on Dec. 11 and that the venue will be at the CJ ENM Contents World in Paju, Gyeonggi-do, which is the same location as last year's ceremony.
Mnet reportedly planned to hold the 2021 MAMA overseas and considered various angles before making their final decision. They have then decided that it would be impossible to hold the event outside of Korea given that the COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing.
Previously, Ilgan Sports reported that Mnet is tackling the possibility of holding the 2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards in Hong Kong in December. Mnet has reportedly informed some companies about this possibility and asked them to stay quiet about it for a while as it is not confirmed yet.
Rumors stated that Mnet was considering the option to host the 2021 MAMA overseas since it is now possible for people to get vaccinated.
At that time, a representative of Mnet stated to Sports Donga that the place of the 2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards remains undecided and that they will prioritize the health of the artist and staff when determining the host location.
Meanwhile, Mnet is yet to release an official statement regarding the 2021 MAMA being held in Korea on Dec. 11.
About Mnet Asian Music Awards and the Previous Host Locations
Mnet Asian Music Awards is one of the biggest South Korean music awards presented by the entertainment agency, CJ E&M, every year. The majority of the awards are given to K-pop artists, while some of the prizes are awarded to other Asian artists.
MAMA was first held in Seoul in 1999 and was broadcasted domestically on Mnet. Since 2010, the awards ceremony has often been held in different locations outside Korea. In 2010 and 2011, it took place in Macau and Singapore, respectively.
From 2012 to 2016, the Mnet Asian Music Awards happened in Hong Kong. Then, in 2017 and 2018, it was held in different nations such as Hong Kong, Vietnam, South Korea, and Japan.
The 2019 MAMA took place in Japan, but it was supposed to be held in Hong Kong. They changed the host location due to the ongoing protests at that time.
The latest event, the 2020 MAMA, happened in South Korea. That year's ceremony caused controversy over discrimination between K-pop idols and actors in providing them with waiting rooms. In addition to this, Dispatch reported that the venue was filled with black dust particles as the CJ ENM Contents World was still under construction at that time.
