Youn Yuh Jung Wins 'Best Supporting Actress' At '2021 Oscar Awards': First Korean To Do So
The '93rd Academy Awards' (the '2021 Oscars') were held simultaneously on April 25 (local time) at the Dolby Theater and Union Station in Los Angeles, California.
At the ceremony, actress Youn Yuh Jung won the 'Best Supporting Actress' category for her role in 'Minari', while competing with Maria Bakalova in 'Borat Subsequent Moviefilm', Glenn Close in 'Hillbilly Elegy', Olivia Colman in 'The Father', and Amanda Seyfried in 'Mank'.
'Minari' depicts the settlement of Korean families who immigrated to the United States in the 1980s. It is a work that tells the autobiographical story of Korean-American director Jung Yi Sak, and Yoon Yeo Jung performed enthusiastically in the drama, transforming into the grandmother Sun Ja.
The 74-year-old actress - a movie icon of South Korea, has starred as the lead role in more than 100 films. Now, Youn Yuh Jung became the first actress to hold the Academy Award trophy in the 102 years of Korean film history. She is the second Asian actress to won the category after Miyoshi Umeki in the 1957 film 'Sayonara'.
Director Bong Joon Ho's 'Parasite' won 4 Academy Awards last year, but there was no acting award, leaving a regret.
Earlier, Youn Yuh Jung won 38 gold medals, sweeping the 'supporting actress' category at various awards ceremonies around the world, including the 'Screen Actors Guild Awards', the 'British Film Academy Awards', and the '36th Film Independent Spirit Awards'.
