Mel B, the former Spice Girls member and also American's got Talent's judge talked about her childhood life in Leeds where she first knew about racial discrimination and be a victim, as well. The events happened even when she shot to fame.
Mel recalled one moment in her memory at a designer store, she was suggested by the owner to "leave" of a gig for Nelson Mandela and Prince Charles.
She said: "There were times when there was obvious racism, I was asked to leave a designer clothes shop in Sun City when I was with all the other girls and we were there performing for Prince Charles and Nelson Mandela."
"Of course, all the girls had a go at the assistant because they were so shocked.
"It's pretty awful to think I wasn't actually shocked because if you are brown then there's always a part of you that expects some confrontation."
That must be not the first time she was acknowledge of racist.
One of the most noticeable feature of Mel B in Spice Girls is her signature curly dark-brown hair. However, "Ok, so we need to straighten your hair", that was what a hairstylist told Mel when she's about to do Spice Girls' hair. Mel B shared about that moment: "I remember when we first did the video for Wannabe we had a big styling team and one of the first things they said to me was: "Ok, so we need to straighten your hair."
"I refused point-blank because my hair was my identity and yes it was different to all the other girls but that was what the Spice Girls were about – celebrating our differences."
"That was a big deal to me."
Over-shocked but more than that, it could tell that Mel B was hurt as the whole concept of Spice Girls is 'celebrating differences' but when it came to 'black' people, she had to 'fit in' and change who she was.
