In a 2019 interview she spoke of having 'taken care of' mother Betty her ''whole life''. And Ellen DeGeneres was a doting daughter once more on Wednesday, as she cut Betty's hair for her 90th birthday.
Although Betty wasn't sold on the gift, asking ''Why am I letting her do this?'' in a video of the trim posted to Instagram on Thursday.
The Finding Nemo voice actress, 62, captioned the post, ''90th birthday present for my Mama.'' During the video, the talk show host attempted to allay her mother's fears by telling her, ''It's not that short mother, it's just taking the edges off."
''You don't use scissors?'' Betty asked at one point in the video, as Ellen DeGeneres sheared off her silver tresses with clippers. ''Believe me, you don't want me using scissors,'' replied her TV star offspring.
Once she was finished, DeGeneres asked if her mom liked the close cropped cut. ''Not yet, but once I wash it... oh, you really cut it short,'' marveled the nonagenarian.
In 2019, Ellen spoke about her close relationship with her mother despite some trying times during an interview with David Letterman. DeGeneres said that her stepfather groped her breasts several times when she was a young teenager by claiming to be looking for lumps.
And Ellen kept the truth from her mother in order to protect her.''I didn’t want to tell my mother cause I was protecting her and I knew that would ruin her happiness,'' said the comedienne.
She did however eventually break her silence - to no avail. ''And then she didn't believe me and then she stayed with him for 18 more years. And finally left him because he'd changed the story so many times," said Ellen. Of her mother, she said: "I always have taken care of her my whole life. So I just kept taking care of her."
