The singer Kyulkyung (Zhou Jieqiong) has received a lot of negative reactions from the Korean public after terminating her contract with Pledis Entertainment.
On March 25, Pledis Entertainment announced that it had filed a lawsuit against singer Kyulkyung for breach of contract. Reportedly, the Chinese star signed an exclusive contract with Pledis in 2015 and is promoted as part of I.O.I, PRISTIN, and PRISTIN V.
However, at the beginning of September last year, Kyulkyung sent some notices of contract termination by mail and email and was avoiding all contact with Pledis and XCSS Entertainment staff. Since then, Kyulkyung has appeared in dramas, TV shows and promotions in China. XCSS Entertainment has filed a lawsuit in China asking her to adhere to the exclusive contracts and demanding compensation.
Afterwards, Kyulkyung responded through her Weibo account: “Due to serious problems during the working process, after careful consideration of my career development, I - Kyulkyung, formally submitted an offer to terminate the contract with Pledis Entertainment and XCSS Entertainment on September 10, 2019.
I don't want to argue about right and wrong anymore. All I can do is work hard, improve myself, show people better projects and not let those who love and trust me to be disappointed.” It is known that Kyulkyung appeared on Produce 101 in 2016 and debuted in the I.O.I project team. After I.O.I disbanded, she joined the girl group PRISTIN, which disbanded in May last year.
This is not the first time a Chinese artist violated or terminated contracts with their entertainment company after building their careers and fame in Korea. Several of them have returned to their home entertainment market to continue pursuing a celebrity career.
Here are some responses from Korean netizens:
[+2,677, -30] And that is why she is Chinese
[+2,491, -23] So why do management companies continue to recruit Chinese members after all this? They all behave the same way. Once they have earned enough fame and money, they terminate the contracts on their own terms.
[+2,195, -25] Exactly what one could guess from a Chinese member, biting the hand that fed them
[+142, -3] Why do Chinese people think that a contract is like a piece of toilet paper? They deserve to be kicked out of the world market.
[+129, -4] Please don't recruit Japanese or Chinese members in K-Pop groups. We are always betrayed by them
[+122, -10] Yes, that is the answer. She was the reason behind PRISTIN disband. This is why people keep asking entertainment companies to stop hiring Chinese members.
[+112, -4] Once again, Chinese traitors
[08:00, -2] SM has really suffered many bad things. I didn't think smaller companies would struggle with this either
[+50, -2] It's unfair that we do all the training just to let them turn their backs on us
[+46, -2] From Super Junior's Hankyung to EXO and now Kyulkyung, we can't trust them …
