Butter was released earlier this year and 'Permission To Dance' was released on 9th July 2021. Almost instantly, it started breaking records and climbed up the music charts, both in Korea and internationally. An accompanying music video was also released, which amplified the excitement for this special album.
Global listening parties were arranged, a 'Butterful Getaway With BTS' was arranged on Naver NOW and a dance challenge was also curated by BTS for TikTok to make this comeback even more special.
Concept
The concept for this special album seems to be a light-hearted ode to summer and the cheery joy that it brings with it. At a time when the world is still reeling from a deadly pandemic, BTS brings us a flavourful refreshment to keep the spirits up. The album prefaces good days that are ahead of us and urges the listeners to revel in the glory of summer.
There's nothing too serious or intense about the two songs, except, of course, the members' visuals which are unbelievably appealing as always.
Fashion and Appearance
4 distinct concept photo sets were released for BTS' comeback with 'Permission to Dance'. The predominant theme was one of enjoyment and carefree behavior. The members' fashion also reflected the same sentiment.
In one set, the members are seen wearing boiler suits and seem to be giving the message that they are criminals who have stolen our hearts and that they "don't need permission to dance". V and JungKook can be seen with heart-shaped handcuffs as well. In another set against the same orange background, the BTS members have a more grunge look with leather, chokers and denim.
The photoset in front of the car wash/gas station is once again reminiscent of the heat of summer as the members are dressed in casual clothes such as t-shirts and jeans whereas the beach set just gives us vacation vibes with the members' clothes getting a burst of color and tropical tones. Jimin has burgundy red hair, J-Hope has platinum blonde and black dual-tone hair whereas JungKook has dark purple hair.
In the music video, RM has bright yellow hair, V's hair is auburn, Jimin and JungKook have black hair, Suga's hair is greyish blue whereas Jin has a beautiful brownish pink dye.
Dance
The choreography for 'Permission to Dance' is one of the simpler ones from BTS' discography. It is catchy and has all the makings for it to go viral.
From lyrical killing points to simple steps that anyone can do, this dance emphasizes having fun and being free. Many fans are comparing it to "High School Musical", with the film even taking on Twitter trends right after 'Permission to Dance' was released. This only goes to show how much people resonated with the song on a similar level.
Music
'Butter' is a disco-pop single whereas 'Permission to Dance' is more of a dance-pop track. Famous singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran co-wrote this song for BTS alongside Johnny McDaid, Steve Mac and Jenna Andrews. Jenna Andrews also co-wrote BTS' 'Butter'. 'Permission to Dance' serves as the b-side track to this special album. Both the songs are vocal-heavy but the rap parts are equally as great too! BTS performed 'Permission to Dance' on their comeback special program at Naver NOW.
