Boy group BTS has recently voiced their participation in the anti-racial discrimination movement that has been spreading in the United States.
BTS wrote in Korean and English on their official Twitter account on June 4 that, "We stand against racial discrimination. We condemn violence. You, I and we all have the right to be respected. We will stand together."
They once again said they support the anti-racism movement by attaching hashtag #BlackLivesMatter to the post.
In addition, BTS will donate money to organizations fighting against racial discrimination.
The boys' agency Big Hit Entertainment said on the same day that it is difficult to reveal the specific donation amount, but confirmed, "We have finished discussions with the Ministry of Finance and the remittance process is currently underway."
News of BTS' anti-racism and donations came amid the spread of anti-racism campaigns across the United States. after a white police officer killed an unarmed black man - George Floyd - in Minneapolis, Minnesota last month. Online posts with hashtag #BlackLivesMatter have been posted one after another, prompting criticism of racial discrimination.
Global pop stars such as Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande and Beyoncé also posted on social media expressing their solidarity with the black community and opposition to racial discrimination while paying tribute to George Floyd. Some celebrities even participated in the demonstration directly.
Major music labels, including Universal Music, Sony Music and Warner Records, conducted "Blackout Tuesday" and suspended their business for a day.
BTS has always expressed its opposition to social discrimination both on and off the stage. They gave a speech at the UN General Assembly in 2018 to encourage people to "love yourself and speak out", and launched a 'LOVE MYSELF' campaign to help the younger generation feel self-esteem and eradicate discrimination and violence.
Considering that they have huge fandom around the world, especially their strong influence on SNS, BTS' anti-racism statement is expected to have a huge impact.
In fact, when Suga delivered 100 million won to the Hope Bridge National Disaster Relief Association in February, fans around the world donated a series of refunds following the cancellation of BTS' concert in Seoul, raising hundreds of millions of won to the organization.
