"The Last Days of American Crime" of Netflix tells a story when America was in its dark days - before the Government uses sonic waves to control people's brains in order to purify criminals.
A bank-robber trio, Kevin Cash (Michael C. Pitt) - a gangsters' leader, his son Graham Bricke (Edgar Ramírez) and Shelby Dupree (Anna Brewster) - a talented hacker planned to rob $1 billion from the Government and escape to Canada before they got affected by the sonic wave system.
Since its releasing day on June 5, The Last Days of American Crime - a Netflix originals has rank 1st in the audience's views. However, the movie has got any positive comments with a score of 2.24/10 and major criticism, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
"This crime ( as "Crime" in the movie's name) is a punishment", one said.
On Metacritic, it was only marked 16/100 points. On IMDb, the Last Days of American Crime scored 3.6/10 with comments as "unacceptable" and "the actual crime is the movie itself".
Despite the expectation to become one of the biggest strikes for Netflix, The Last Days of American Crimes disappointed in its writing. Megaton's desire was to make a sci-fi movie with the idea of eliminating criminals "on the wholescale" in developed countries. He said: "Let's build a system to control people's minds, take on police's rights without worrying about the consequences". However, the movie's plots were uncompleted.
In the movie, the trio's plan was sophisticated but what happened later was drown in unnecessary details like a love triangle, paybacks of criminal gangs. At first, the sonic wave was a perfect metaphor for people's curiosity about the distance between government and citizens. Then, it became just a background for car-chasing and violent scenes. Some of the character's lines were introduced at first but totally forgotten at the end.
Netflix's "The Last Days of American Crimes" is considered as failing in releasing time. According to Variety, a brutal scene was when police strangled Shelby was too cruel, which reminded of the tragic death of George Floyd in real life.
