It appears Britney Spears has rained on Lady Gaga’s parade. Although this week’s big new release is Gaga’s sixth studio album Chromatica, Britney’s previously unreleased song Mood Ring from 2016 made its way to the top of the US iTunes chart on Friday.
Moon Ring was previously only available in Japan as a bonus track on her 2016 album Glory, but she decided to release it in the U.S. this week with new cover artwork, prompted by her fans love for the album.
Gaga has been putting in a lot of effort this week heavily publicizing the release of her new record, particularly with the promotional single Rain On Me featuring Ariana Grande.
Still, Gaga has been receiving rave reviews for the new record with many citing it as a return to form for the kooky pop star. However, on Friday, Gaga did reveal news that she had decided to postpone a global listening party that she was organizing with fans.
”As much as I want to listen to Chromatica together as a global group of kindness punks right now, our kindness is needed for the world today,” Gaga tweeted to her fans.
“I’m going to postpone our listening session right now and encourage you all to take this time to register to vote and raise your voice.”
She added: “I’m so glad the album is bringing you some joy, because that’s what I always wanted it to do. We’ll reschedule this very soon. Red heart”
Meanwhile, it’s the first time Britney has released ‘new’ music in over four years. She decided to drop the song after fans managed to get her album Glory back to the top spot on iTunes earlier this month.
It seems to be an emerging trend among pop divas such as Britney Spears, Mariah Carey and Madonna – who encourage their fans to get their old records trending again.
