Roy Kim's agency Stone Music Entertainment told Newsen on May 11 that "Roy Kim applied for the Marine Corps in March and recently received a final acceptance notice from the Military Manpower Administration. He will be admitted to the Marine Corps' education and training team located in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, on June 15 to fulfill his duty of national defense."

Roy Kim is the winner of Mnet's 'Superstar K4' in 2012, and made his official debut in the music industry by releasing 'Bom Bom Bom' in 2013. He entered Georgetown University in the U.S. and was loved for 'Only Then' and 'The Hardest Part' while studying and singing at the same time.

In April last year, he was questioned by police for posting photos in the group chat room of KakaoTalk where Jung Joon Young and others were members, which put a brake on his activities. He reportedly screen-captured one of a portal site's photos on his mobile phone and shared them in the chat room, explaining that the photo in the rumor was a composite photo, but he drew public criticism for distributing obscene materials regardless of his intentions. In a related move, he was suspended from indictment in February.

"I'm truly sorry to leave a big scar on my loved ones because of my ignorance and rash behavior," Roy Kim said in his fan cafe in February. "I'll walk with a heavy sense of responsibility and prudence so that I can return to the image of Roy Kim you've supported, loved, and watched deeply so that you won't be let down again."

Many in the entertainment industry have been criticized for dodging military service with various tricks or causing controversy during their military lives. For this reason, Roy Kim's applying for the Marine Corps is meaningful.
